Renovating a co-owned building within sight of four historic monuments

Type
Building
Location
Thonon-les-Bains
Year
2023
Scope
Renovation of the co-owned apartment building

01

The building stands less than 500 metres from four historic monuments: the Saint-Bon tower and chapel, the 18th-century town hall, the church of Saint-Hippolyte and its crypt, and the former Convent of the Visitation. Chimneys, dormers and rainwater downpipes keep their design, and the roof keeps its height and outline, so the listed views stay intact.

02

The flat “Alsace” tiles are relaid as a double-lap roof, the “Dritteldach”, at the same height and to the same dimensions as the original. The ridge tiles are still nailed down to the ridge purlin, and the battens are doubled at the eaves.

03

Thonon-les-Bains’ local urban plan (PLU) asks for roofs to be restored in their original spirit and makes the scalloped tile the reference for terracotta roofs: the project follows it to the letter, in materials and in workmanship.

04

Protecting the heritage also means taking care of the works. A ground-based scaffold gives safe access to the roof, protected passages are kept open for pedestrians at street level, noise stays within legal working hours and the site barriers follow the town hall’s requirements. The old tiles are sorted and taken away.
